Keisha Lance Bottoms has made history!

For, the former Atlanta mayor has become the first Black woman elected governor in US history following a landmark victory in Georgia’s 2026 midterm elections.

Bottoms, 56, defeated Republican billionaire Rick Jackson to claim the state’s highest office.

In doing so, she shattered a political barrier more than two centuries in the making.

According to the Associated Press, Bottoms won Georgia’s gubernatorial election on Tuesday (November 3).

Her triumph came despite Jackson spending more than $200 million of his personal fortune on the race.

The victory also makes Bottoms Georgia’s first woman governor and its first Black governor.

Furthermore, she becomes the first Democrat to win the governorship since 1998.

The breakthrough carries particular significance following Stacey Abrams’ unsuccessful bids for the same office in 2018 and 2022.

Indeed, the milestone carries deep personal meaning for the politician.

Her Georgia roots stretch back at least five generations to ancestors who were enslaved in the state.

Bottoms served as Atlanta mayor from 2018 to 2022 before joining President Joe Biden’s administration.

She also appeared alongside Abrams and Oprah Winfrey in the ‘Where Do We Go From Here?’ Black justice special in 2020.

Now, she’ll succeed Republican Governor Brian Kemp when his term concludes.
