Da’Vinchi Apologizes After Backlash for Asserting Americans Are “Lazy” & “Incompetent”: My Message Was “Clumsy” & “Sloppy”

Da’Vinchi was in da hot seat during a recent episode of ‘The Breakfast Club,’ and the Haitian-American actor used the time to address the ongoing backlash for incendiary comments he made about slavery and modern-day African Americans being “lazy.”

Taking to the popular radio show on Tuesday (October 27), the ‘BMF‘ and ‘All American’ star tackled the hoopla head-on.

“To make it clear, I’m not on social media as much. I didn’t know how bad things were until people were calling me. I was like, ‘What is going on?’ The things that I saw, I saw something that said, ‘I saw something that said I think black people are lazy?’ I was like, ‘Where did that come from?’ I had to sit down and watch the interview for myself. Just to be clear, I used a harsh word. I should have used a different word,” he said before clarifying, “I was speaking about the nation as a whole. I know my wording was clumsy. So I shouldn’t have used harsh language like ‘incompetent.’ I should have definitely used different language, you know? I think the language was too abrasive for a nuanced conversation.”

Later in the chat, the 31-year-old (born Abraham Juste) waxed honest about his remorse over how his comments were perceived.

“I apologize that my wording was harsh,” he said (as seen in the clip above). “My message that I was trying to convey got lost with my clumsy wording. I shouldn’t have said this like that. I see how they took that, I see it. So it was like, yeah, it was kind of sloppy.”

The firestorm of controversy all began earlier this month after Da’Vinchi took to Cam Newton‘s ‘Funky Friday‘ podcast to dish on the end of ‘BMF‘ and the debate about non-American Black actors “taking” American Black actor roles.

His commentary on the hot topic veered off into a generalization that landed him in some serious hot water.

“I do think that the work ethic of Americans is one that people in a higher position don’t feel they can trust them,” he said at the time, before adding, “I feel like my generation, our generation, what we’re seeing is that humans are becoming more incompetent.”

As if that wasn’t enough, he later doubled down on the notion in the same interview.

“I had work ethic. I was determined. I could take care of myself fully at 8-years-old. In America, no shade to you guys, but the way the culture moved the majority of its citizens, you’re just incompetent for a really long time,” he shared with Newton. “I think this country promotes that.”

Elsewhere in the same damning interview, Da’Vinchi also urged Black Americans to “move on” from blaming slavery for their current-day social conditions.
