R&B singer Chris Brown, 37, has avoided immediate imprisonment in the United Kingdom related to charges of an attack on music producer Abraham Diaw at Tape nightclub in London in February 2023. A London court sentenced him to an eight-month prison term, suspended for 12 months, on Monday, October 26, 2026.
According to Reuters, Judge Tony Baumgartner handed down the sentence at Southwark Crown Court, describing the incident as serious public violence. The suspended sentence means Brown will not serve the prison term immediately, provided he complies with the conditions of the sentence and does not trigger its activation. However, if he commits another offence during the applicable suspension period or breaches relevant conditions, the court could activate the prison sentence.
During sentencing, Judge Baumgartner emphasized the severity of the attack, noting that Chris Brown repeatedly used a bottle against Diaw, including striking him twice on the head. Brown and his vocal coach, Omololu Akinlolu, 40, pleaded guilty to affray in July. They had previously denied more serious charges, including attempting to inflict grievous bodily harm and assault occasioning actual bodily harm.
Chris Brown’s supporters gathered outside the courthouse before the hearing. After the sentence was delivered, the singer thanked the judge and acknowledged fans seated in the public gallery as he left the courtroom. Brown was arrested in May 2025 after returning to Britain for the first time since the alleged nightclub incident. He was initially denied bail, raising questions about whether his international Breezy Bowl XX tour would proceed.
He was later released after agreeing to provide £5 million in security, approximately $6.68 million at the time, allowing the tour to continue. The case adds to a history of legal troubles involving the singer. In 2009, Brown pleaded guilty to assaulting his then-girlfriend, Rihanna, and received five years of probation. He also admitted to a 2013 assault involving a fan who had approached him for a photograph, according to Reuters.
