Master P is speaking publicly about Mystikal’s 20-year prison sentence, using a recent podcast appearance to discuss mental health care, substance use and the stigma surrounding treatment in the Black community.
During an interview on the “We in Miami” podcast, the No Limit Records founder addressed the sentence handed to Mystikal, whose legal name is Michael Lawrence Tyler. Mystikal was sentenced in June after pleading guilty to third-degree rape in connection with a 2022 assault at his home in Prairieville, Louisiana.
As WBRZ reported, the rapper received the 20-year sentence on June 16. The woman who reported the assault described being punched and choked, having her braids pulled out and being raped. She asked the judge to impose the maximum sentence.
In the podcast interview, Master P turned to concerns about mental health treatment and substance use, suggesting Mystikal had not received appropriate medical care.
“I don’t think he never got the right medicine he need,” Master P said speaking about Mystikal after returning from his service in the U.S. military. “I feel like, man, look, man, I’m telling y’all like drugs is killing our culture, killing our people.”
He argued that some people turn to drugs to cope with challenges rather than seeking professional support. Master P also highlighted the stigma that can keep people from acknowledging mental health struggles.
“When you look at mental health, man, a lot of people afraid to say they dealing with this,” he said, adding that this is especially true in the Black community, where seeking help can be “frowned upon.”
“I feel like we could save more lives,” Master P continued, calling for people to get “the right doctors” and counseling.
Mystikal previously served prison time after pleading guilty to sexual battery and extortion in 2003. His latest sentence follows a separate case stemming from the 2022 assault.
