Comedian Jasmin Brown is opening up about her battle with postpartum depression. Brown, who is currently dating former NFL star Cam Newton, took to Instagram about her mental state following the birth of the couple’s two children.
“I had kids back to back so I didn’t realize I was going through postpartum depression until it literally just kicked me in my teeth,” she said in a video. Brown and the former NFL quarterback welcomed a daughter in 2024, followed by a son in 2025.
The actress spoke about how she felt like a “high functioning” depressed person because of the way she showed up for others. She said it took her hiring a nanny for her to realize the symptoms of postpartum were there. “Oh b—h, oh you depressed,” she said, recalling the moment it dawned on her one year after her son was born.
While PPD affects roughly 1 in 8 women overall, the risk is for Black women is 1.6 times higher, according to the American Hospital Association.
Brown also petitioned men watching to take their partner’s mental health seriously. “People act like it’s a hoax,” she said. The subject of postpartum depression has been a hot topic on the internet due to the Lindsay Clancy trial. The Massachusetts woman was charged with first-degree murder in the January 2023 deaths of her three young children at the family’s home.
Although she admitted to the act, Clancy pleaded not guilty, with her defense arguing that she was not criminally responsible because she was suffering from postpartum psychosis and had been overmedicated. Prosecutors argued that she planned the killings and understood right from wrong.
Online debates about the case, which was declared on mistrial on Sep. 4, included many (mostly men) detractors who questioned the legitimacy of postpartum depression symptoms.
Brown ended the video by saying she’s taking time to lean into her kids and God, saying “no weapon formed against me shall prosper.”
