Run-DMC co-founder Darryl McDaniels was riding in an SUV that collided with a garbage truck on a Los Angeles freeway Friday, Oct. 30. The rapper reported minor pain at the scene, according to local authorities. His representative later said everyone involved was OK.
The crash occurred on the 105 Freeway near the 110 Freeway interchange, TMZ reported Friday. The California Highway Patrol said it received a call about the two-vehicle collision at 11:43 a.m. Sources told TMZ that McDaniels was a passenger, not the driver.
Video shared on the Citizen app showed a black SUV facing against traffic, with shattered glass inside and severe damage to its passenger side. The garbage truck was nearby, and workers could be seen surveying the scene. The SUV was later towed, according to TMZ.
McDaniels was also filmed standing beside the damaged vehicle and speaking with Los Angeles Fire Department personnel. At one point, he smiled toward someone recording the aftermath. The footage did not show how the collision happened.
NBC Los Angeles reported that responding highway patrol officers found McDaniels complaining of minor pain. His representative told the station that the other passengers in the SUV were OK. Separately, his management confirmed the accident to AllHipHop, saying McDaniels and everyone else involved were OK.
Officials had not established what caused the crash or released a complete count of the people involved. The California Highway Patrol told TMZ the freeway scene had been cleared but offered no further details.
McDaniels, known to fans as DMC, founded Run-DMC with Joseph “Rev. Run” Simmons and Jason “Jam Master Jay” Mizell. The group helped bring hip-hop to mainstream audiences with songs including “It’s Tricky” and its collaboration with Aerosmith on “Walk This Way.” Run-DMC was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2009.
As of Saturday, authorities had not announced a cause, and Darryl McDaniels’ representatives had not reported any serious injuries.
