Investigators are reportedly examining a long-running marriage-fraud allegation that Omar has repeatedly denied.
A federal investigation involving Minnesota Congresswoman Ilhan Omar has expanded to examine a long-running allegation about her personal history, with investigators now reviewing marriage and family records, NBC News has reported.
In a report published October 29, NBC News said investigators are examining whether Omar married a man alleged to be her brother to help him obtain US immigration status. The report cited a former government official and another person familiar with the investigation.
Omar has repeatedly rejected claims that she married her brother, describing the allegations as false. Following the October search, she characterised the government’s actions as political intimidation.
The inquiry reportedly includes a review of a marriage certificate application Omar submitted years ago. Sources familiar with the document told NBC that the family relationship between the two individuals was not disclosed at the time. Investigators are examining whether the information on the application could support a marriage-fraud allegation.
The report also identifies a possible obstruction inquiry. Investigators are reviewing electronic communications involving members of Omar’s family, and at least one relative’s electronic devices have reportedly been seized.
Ilhan Omar investigation follows search of her Washington home
The latest developments come weeks after Homeland Security Investigations agents searched Omar’s Washington, DC-area residence on October 12 under a court-authorised warrant.
The search was part of a broader federal inquiry into possible immigration-related misrepresentations. Reuters previously reported that investigators were examining whether Omar or relatives provided false information in immigration paperwork. The Justice Department has not publicly detailed the full scope of the evidence.
NBC said Omar had not immediately responded to its request for comment on the latest details.
No criminal charges arising from the reported marriage allegations have been announced. The investigation and the claims being examined do not establish that Omar committed a crime.
