‘Girlfriends’ cast reunites to cheer on Tracee Ellis Ross’ Broadway debut

Former cast mates celebrate Ross’ Broadway debut role in “Every Brilliant Thing” with emotional reunion.

The cast of the beloved sitcom “Girlfriends” reunited in New York City to support Tracee Ellis Ross as she made her Broadway debut in “Every Brilliant Thing.” Former co-stars Golden Brooks, Jill Marie Jones and Persia White were in attendance, celebrating the milestone nearly two decades after the hit series ended. Actress Gabrielle Union also joined the celebration.

White later shared photos from the night on Instagram, reflecting on the emotional experience of watching Ross take center stage. “I feel so blessed to have experienced this with my lovely Girlfriends and some beautiful faces I haven’t seen for years, including Tracee’s handsome dad!” White wrote. She continued, “Thank you to everyone there who has supported Tracee in this journey and helped make this wonderful show possible. Above all thank you Tracee for giving me a brilliant thing!”

The reunion brought together the women who helped make Girlfriends one of television’s most celebrated portrayals of Black friendship. Created by Mara Brock Akil, the series aired for eight seasons from 2000 to 2008. Ross starred as attorney Joan Clayton alongside Brooks, Jones and White. Tracee Ellis Ross is currently headlining “Every Brilliant Thing” through August 9, succeeding actress Mariska Hargitay in the acclaimed one-person production. Daniel Radcliffe previously starred in the Broadway revival.

Written by Duncan Macmillan and Jonny Donahoe, “Every Brilliant Thing” follows a person who creates a list of reasons to live while trying to help a parent struggling with depression. Before Ross took over the role, playwright Macmillan praised her as the ideal performer, highlighting her warmth and  humor. For longtime fans, the Broadway celebration served as another reminder that while Girlfriends may have ended nearly 20 years ago, the bond between its stars continues to endure.
