Mother mourns 5-year-old daughter killed in Houston-area road rage shooting

Authorities have arrested a suspect in connection with the shooting that killed Zah’Layah Walter and injured two of her siblings.

A Houston-area mother is mourning the loss of her 5-year-old daughter after gunfire struck the family’s car in what authorities describe as an apparent road rage shooting.

Zah’Layah Walter was riding with her mother, Monica Hicks, and four siblings on Grant Road near Jones Road in northwest Harris County on Sept. 19 when another driver allegedly opened fire. Zah’Layah was struck in the head and later died at a hospital. Two of her siblings were also injured by shattered glass.

FOX 26 Houston reported on the family’s grief, sharing emotional footage from a vigil where Hicks remembered the final conversation she had with her daughter.

Hicks said Zah’Layah had asked her whether she could have a Hot Pocket when they got home. “The last thing I said was, ‘Yes,’” she recalled.

According to Hicks, she did not immediately realize that her daughter had been shot. She described hearing what sounded like wind rushing past her before the vehicle’s rear window shattered.

“I did not know my baby was hit,” Hicks said at the vigil.

The mother described Zah’Layah as a happy, affectionate child who would tell strangers that she loved them. She also spoke about the difficulty of grieving while caring for her other children.

“I wouldn’t wish this pain on anybody,” Hicks said.

Authorities have since arrested 47-year-old Jeremy Porter in connection with the shooting. He was booked into the Harris County Jail and charged with capital murder, according to Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez. Investigators used automated license plate reader technology to help identify and locate the vehicle associated with the shooting.

Investigators have described the incident as an apparent road rage shooting, although Hicks has said she does not believe she or her family had any interaction with another driver that would explain the attack. She told ABC13 that she did not hear an argument or realize what had happened until she stopped and saw Zah’Layah unresponsive.

The arrest gives Zah’Layah’s family a significant development in the case, but it does little to ease the grief of losing a child so suddenly. As the investigation continues, Hicks is left to remember a daughter she described as loving, joyful and always by her side, while leaning on the community for support through an unimaginable loss.
