October 23 brought with it ‘Muse‘ – the eleventh studio album from John Legend.
His first traditional effort since delivering the eponymous ‘Legend‘ LP in 2022, ‘Muse’ came as a sonically adventurous effort for the 13-time GRAMMY winner by boldly fusing sounds of Gospel, Doo-Wop, classic Soul, Afrobeats, and Hip-Hop.
Produced in its entirety by Pharrell Williams, the 16-track affair was preceded to Billboard 200 chart battle by the warmly received singles ‘Daylight‘ and ‘Fireflies.‘
With its inaugural sales tracking week in its rear view, hop inside to see how ‘Muse’ fared commercially.
John Legend’s ‘Muse’
First-Week Sales (SPS): 15,460 units
First-Week Sales (Pure): 13,000 units
Billboard 200 Debut: #36
With total sales just north of 15,400, ‘Muse’ moseyed onto the updated Billboard 200 at #36 – the highest rung its EGOT-winning creator has reached on the all-genre tally with a traditional studio album since 2020’s ‘Bigger Love‘ landed at #19.
More notably, the LP’s pure sales of 13,000 come as the largest sum to accompany a Legend project since ‘Darkness and Light‘ shined bright in 2016 with opening pure figures of 26,000 units.
As it relates to the competition, only two other new albums shifted more pure sales numbers than John this week: Josiah Queen‘s ‘Damascus Road‘ (15,350 units) as well as Anderson. Paak and Cordae‘s joint ‘Heavy Is the Crown‘ album (18,250 units).
Faring even better on Billboard’s Top R&B Albums index, ‘Muse’ debuted at #6 – keeping his 13-year top 10 streak on that particular tally alive and well.
