“That’s So Raven” actor receives 30-month prison sentence

Former child star Bobb’e J. Thompson has been sentenced after pleading guilty to a stolen gun charge

Actor and rapper Bobb’e J. Thompson received a 30-month federal prison sentence Thursday after pleading guilty to a gun charge in Iowa.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Iowa said the former child star pleaded guilty to possession of a firearm by a felon. The 30-year-old’s criminal history includes a 2020 conviction for battery with serious bodily injury, a 2020 assault conviction and a 2022 conviction for prohibited possession of a firearm.

Thompson was arrested last year after law enforcement officers observed him driving 104 mph in a 70-mph zone in Cerro Gordo County, Iowa. According to federal prosecutors, an officer saw Thompson and a passenger switching seats as police approached the vehicle. Officers also detected the smell of marijuana coming from the car.

During a subsequent search, officers found a backpack belonging to Thompson that contained multiple bags of marijuana purchased from a dispensary and a .40-caliber handgun. The firearm was loaded with a 15-round magazine and had a round in the chamber. Prosecutors said the gun had been reported stolen from a vehicle in Kansas City, Missouri.

The Kansas City native is known for playing Stanley on Disney Channel’s “That’s So Raven.” He also appeared on hit sitcoms including “30 Rock,” “The Tracy Morgan Show” and “Tyler Perry’s House of Payne,” as well as MTV’s “Wild ‘N Out.” Thompson played Ronnie Shields in the 2008 comedy “Role Models” and also appeared in films including “Shark Tale” and “Me and Earl and the Dying Girl.”

Thompson began acting as a child and continued working in television and film into adulthood. According to IMDb, he has appeared in two projects since 2022: the short film “Hot Girl Getaway” and “The Funny Thing About Love,” which streamed on ALLBLK. The site also lists two upcoming projects, “Generation Angst” and “Child Support.”

In 2024, Thompson also spoke publicly about his experience working with comedian Tracy Morgan on “The Tracy Morgan Show.” During an appearance on the “Comedy Hype” podcast, Thompson alleged that Morgan mistreated him when he was a child, claiming the comedian became upset when Thompson was “stealing laughs” and would criticize him to producers. Morgan or his representatives had not responded to the allegations at the time of the WBLS report.

Thompson pleaded guilty to the federal firearm charge in April. He was sentenced in Sioux City by U.S. District Court Judge Leonard T. Strand and will serve three years of supervised release after completing his prison sentence. Federal authorities said there is no parole in the federal prison system. Thompson is currently in U.S. Marshals custody while awaiting transfer to a federal prison.
