The music icon is suing Carmen Efferson with claims that she has lived on his property rent-free for nearly four decades.

Stevie Wonder has moved to have an alleged ex-girlfriend legally removed from a property he owns. According to TMZ, the 76-year-old is taking legal action against Carmen Efferson to evict her from a Los Angeles property she has resided in rent-free for nearly four decades. Efferson has lived at the home since July 1988 under a verbal agreement, with no written lease and $0 rent.

Efferson is rumored to have once been engaged to the singer. Wonder has been married to Tomeeka Robyn Bracy since 2017. He was previously married to Syreeta Wright from 1970 to 1972, and Kai Millard from 2001 to 2015.

The music icon’s team allegedly attempted to enter the property multiple times for an insurance inspection and claimed Efferson refused their entry. According to his lawyers, since they were not able to get in, coverage was jeopardized, and they moved to send Efferson an official notice of eviction in July 2026. Efferson was reportedly due out of the home by Aug. 27, 2026, yet remains, prompting the lawsuit.

The tabloid reported that communication between Wonder’s legal team and Efferson became intense, with her accusing an attorney of having a “racist cold-blooded ‘white male privilege.'” The team responded with a clarification that the person was neither white nor male. In the lawsuit, the “Superstition” performer has requested a judge order Efferson out, and is also seeking damages and legal costs.

The living legend is currently globe-trotting on his 50th-anniversary tour for “Songs in the Key of Life.” With shows scheduled across North America and Europe, the Grammy winner is set to perform the landmark 1976 album in its entirety. The Michigan native began his journey in Europe and will conclude on Nov. 11 in Glasgow, Scotland.  The anticipated show makes its way to the United States on Nov. 19 at Madison Square Garden in New York City, with additional stops planned for Chicago and Detroit before closing in Inglewood, Calif.
