Sabrina Carpenter isn’t here for your double standards – and she’s stripping down both literally and figuratively to prove her point.
Details below…
The ‘Espresso’ singer is serving full confidence on the cover of Rolling Stone, baring it all in a racy shoot that’s as bold as her words.
In the accompanying interview, Carpenter gets candid about the pressure women face in the spotlight. She said people scream “girl power” until a woman dares to own her sexuality, she said:
“We’re in such a weird time where you would think it’s girl power, and women supporting women but in reality, the second you see a picture of someone wearing a dress on a carpet, you have to say everything mean about in the first 30 seconds that you see it.”
Known for her quirky lyrics and sultry stage presence, the 25-year-old makes it clear: she is not the issue; society’s obsession with policing women is. She vented:
“I don’t want to be pessimistic, but I truly feel like I’ve never lived in a time where women have been picked apart more, and scrutinized in every capacity. I’m not just talking about me. I’m talking about every female artist that is making art right now.”
When it comes to criticism about her sexy performances? Carpenter says keep talking – the critic’s outrage says more about them than her.
Elsewhere, she opened up about a myriad of topics.
On Kicking Off Her New Album Cycle With ‘Manchild’:
“If I really wanted to, I could have stretched out Short n’ Sweet much, much longer. But I’m at that point in my life where I’m like, ‘Wait a second, there’s no rules.’ If I’m inspired to write and make something new, I would rather do that. Why would I wait three years just for the sake of waiting three years? It’s all about what feels right. I’m learning to listen to that a lot more, instead of what is perceived as the right or wrong move.”
On Being Inspired By Dolly Parton & Linda Ronstadt:
“They would release a 10-song album every year. I’m like, ‘When did we stop doing that?’ Writers write, they make music, and they release music. I understand the beauty of disappearing. My last two albums both took two and a half years to make, and they needed to. I just think every project is different. It just has to feel right.”
On Finding Her Musical Stride:
“If you ever listen to my old albums… which, don’t…What I was really trying to do is what I’m doing right now, and what I think I accomplished with ‘Short n’ Sweet.’”
