Brandy is no stranger to receiving praise aplenty from her idols, peers, and admirers alike for her vocal display and arrangements over the years, but Pharrell Williams may have taken that adulation to an entirely new level with the acclamation he shared for the R&B diva this week.

Like Brandy, Williams was among the honorees at Black Music Collective’s fourth annual Recording Academy Honors on Thursday (January 29).

The GRAMMY Week event, held just days before Music’s Biggest Night (February 2), saw the producer extraordinaire bestowed the Dr. Dre Global Impact Award in recognition of his “musical achievements, entrepreneurial innovation, philanthropic efforts, and far-reaching cultural influence worldwide.”

During his heartfelt acceptance speech, Williams unexpectedly pivoted to toast his fellow honoree.

“Brandy, open a school for vocals,” he said to applause from the audience.

Later calling her gift “an anointing,” Pharrell asserted its time for Brandy to become a leader in directly teaching the next generation of singers.

“Extend your oil into a school. Trust me on this – you are different. Your runs are walking people down,” he spoke to Brandy who seemed to be growing emotional during his short-but-sweet praise session.

His salute was just one of many the R&B diva received that night.

Beyond accepting the Black Music Icon Award, she was also the recipient of a tribute that featured the likes of Raven Symone, Coco Jones, Kehlani, and FLO performing (or performing to) some of her greatest hits.
