Some R&B beaus are throwing (virtual) blows in response to Mario‘s viral weigh-in on who among his male contemporaries can sing.
The GRAMMY nominee’s now infamous interview with Cam Newton‘s ‘Funky Friday‘ podcast saw him assign various grades to the vocal dexterity of singers like Chris Brown, Trey Songz, The Weeknd, Bryson Tiller, Jacquees, Ray J, Omarion, and others.
Apparently, the latter three weren’t pleased with the assessment as they have each taken time to visit the net to clap back at the ‘Let Me Love You’ crooner.
Hop inside to see what they said and how Mario recently responded.
Although the clip above certainly got tongues wagging, Mario (born Mario Barrett) did ultimately give Omarion, Ray J, and Jacquees passing grades for their vocals.
His hesitation, however, is what made the latter hop to social media first to clap back.
“Cam Newton & Mario some h**s, keep my name out yall mouth on dat lil podcast…. I been minding my business,” Quees wrote on X (formerly known as Twitter) on November 5.
Next, O – while chatting it up with ‘Sway’s Universe‘ – addressed Barrett’s comments (as seen in the video above).
“For me, it’s all about respect. You can have your opinion, but the moment I feel there’s no respect there I’m cool. I’d rather step back. I don’t think it’s respect there, especially for somebody like me who has been doing it before him. I’m just saying, it’s not by chance,” he told Sway the week after Mario’s interview.
Finally, Ray – during a visit to DJ Quick Silva‘s radio show – not only offered a response but also challenged Mario to a vocal duel.
“Mario don’t want to see me in a one-for-one singing battle,” Ray said before confirming he did not make his statement under the influence of drugs. “I think song-for-song [I can beat him].”
Barrett – though hot on the touring circuit in celebration of the release of his ‘Mood Swings‘ EP – took to Instagram on Friday (November 14) to clap back at Ray.
“…I come back to my room [after my tour date] and Ray J in my hometown [of Baltimore] talking crazy,” he said on IG Stories. “The biggest stage you touched was on VERZUZ and I told them to bring you on there. I set the whole play up and this how you coming?”
Ouch! At writing, Ray J has not responded to Mario’s latest comment.
