The rapper-actor has announced that he will write, direct, and star as late artist Jean-Michel Basquiat in the forthcoming movie ‘Jean.’

Sharing a first look at his transformation, Cudi explained that previous conversations about portraying the influential artist never materialized into a finished project. So, he decided to build one himself.

Speaking on the project, Cudi gushed:

“For years people have asked me about playing Jean-Michel Basquiat in a film. But no project actually came to be. This year, I finally said, ‘I’ma write it myself.’”

The multihyphenate described the movie as a love letter to Basquiat, 1980s New York, and the art that has inspired him throughout his career.

Cudi said his research included reading extensively and speaking with people who personally knew Basquiat. Cameras are scheduled to begin rolling in 2027.

The announcement follows the performer’s previous decision to step back from releasing albums and focus on directing, acting, painting, and fashion.

As reported, ‘Jean’ joins several Basquiat projects in development, including a separate feature starring Kelvin Harrison Jr. Cudi’s deeply personal connection to the artist will therefore be central to distinguishing his interpretation.
