Kevin Gates is no stranger to making headlines for not mincing words, and his visit to Wednesday’s episode of ‘Club Shay Shay‘ (January 28) proved no different.

The controversial rapper – still hot on the promo trail in support of his December 24-released project ‘Real N***a Holiday’ – took to Shannon Sharpe‘s ‘Shay’ podcast to not only dish on his latest musical efforts but also celebrity hot topics (like Kristy and Desmond Scott‘s divorce, etc.), his own highly publicized romantic woes, and the even chronicled his childhood and journey to fame.

During the discussion about the latter, Gates left Shannon jaw-dropped when he revealed he is a survivor of sexual assault.

Gates hesitantly made the revelation, sharing he was a teenager at the time of the offense.

“He’s dead. He’s outta here,” Kevin relayed – careful not to provide details about who the man was or what caused the man’s demise. “He’ll never do that to anybody again.”

With the tension thick, Sharpe attempted to move the conversation along but Gates wanted to drive home the point about the importance of transparency in parent-child relationships.

“I really broke generational curses with that situation because people that came before me were r-ped. It really created a space for me to have with my children to where they know no one should ever touch you ‘there’ – not even me,” he told Shannon. “I have these open conversations with my children so they are equipped. I created a space where they can tell [me] anything.”

While the Sharpe sit-down is the most attention Gates has gotten around the revelation, he shared this was not his first time addressing the lingering pain of the incident.

Reflecting on his song ‘Protect Children‘ (found aboard 2024’s ‘The Ceremony‘ album), Kevin says the tune’s deeply personal lyrics helped him uncover unhealed trauma that he had suppressed over the years.
