The historic birth comes as McIver continues fighting three federal charges stemming from a 2025 congressional oversight visit.
Rep. LaMonica McIver has welcomed her second child, becoming the first New Jersey member of Congress to give birth while serving in office. The birth announcement comes months after she revealed her pregnancy following years of fertility challenges. McIver previously discussed her pregnancy and federal prosecution in an interview with TheGrio, while an earlier story covered her May announcement that her family was growing.
In a Facebook post shared Oct. 1, McIver announced that she had welcomed the newest member of her family. The public share link available for the announcement did not expose additional details that could be independently verified, including the baby’s name, sex, exact birth date or weight.
“She’s here!” McIver shared in the post on Facebook. “We just welcomed our beautiful baby girl and words can’t describe how blessed my family feels. Being a mom is one of the greatest joys of my life, and I’m beyond grateful.”
“Thank you, everyone, for your love and support. It means the world.”
McIver announced May 15 that she was expecting her second child with her husband, Khalif Thomas. At the time, she said motherhood was one of the greatest joys of her life and described the pregnancy as a source of hope after years of trying to expand her family. She and Thomas already have an older daughter.
New Jersey Globe reported when McIver announced her pregnancy that she was set to become the first New Jersey member of Congress to give birth while in office. McIver has represented New Jersey’s 10th Congressional District since September 2024 and is the first Black woman to represent the district.
Her pregnancy unfolded while she continued fighting federal charges stemming from a May 2025 visit to the Delaney Hall immigration detention facility in Newark. McIver has pleaded not guilty. In August, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit affirmed the denial of legislative immunity on two counts and sent a third count back to the district court for further consideration.
McIver said when she announced her pregnancy that the federal case would not stop her from doing her job or living her life. She also said she planned to continue working while preparing to welcome her child.
