We recap the latest episode of “The Real Housewives of Potomac,” and how Gizelle Bryant found herself answering for all the gossip.
There’s an art to spilling good gossip. You have to know when to share it, who to tell, and just how much to reveal without getting your own hands dirty. Explaining yourself when it all comes back around, however, requires an entirely different set of skills. Just ask Gizelle Bryant.
On Sunday night’s episode of “The Real Housewives of Potomac,” aptly titled “She said, she said,” the longtime Housewife found herself being taken to task not once, not twice, but thrice over the way she’s been talking about her fellow Housewives behind their backs.
Since season 11 kicked off, there has been plenty of drama brewing among the Potomac women. Tia Glover’s marriage has come under scrutiny amid revelations that her husband maintained dating app profiles; Wendy Osefo and her husband, Eddie, are navigating a fraud case; and Karen Huger has returned from prison amid growing distance between her and her husband, Ray. Meanwhile, Bryant has been right there, almost like a Shakespearean narrator, keeping up with the drama from the sidelines and, naturally, keeping listeners of her “Reasonably Shady” podcast in the loop. However, this week, the tables seriously turned on the resident gossip.
Her first reckoning came during a sit-down with Ashley Darby and “friend of” Robyn Dixon, where Darby revealed that Bryant had told her Dixon didn’t like her. This was news to Dixon, who denied ever saying anything of the sort, leaving Bryant to admit she’d merely gotten that impression.
The conversation then turned to Bryant discussing Glover’s marital troubles on her podcast with Dixon, who revealed she’d removed a remark Bryant made teasing that listeners would learn more about the situation in six months. Dixon questioned why Bryant hadn’t been more considerate of Glover, while Darby wondered why Dixon would bring up something that hadn’t even aired.
Now, Darby wasn’t completely wrong. However, Dixon has gone from full-time Housewife to former Housewife to friend of the show, so forgive her if she saw an opportunity to jump back into the double dutch game of relevance and possibly win herself another champagne glass.
Other developments throughout the episode include Glover’s mother, Yetunde, arriving from England for an extended visit. And Bryant and Darby also held another GNA event, this time centered on fitness and wellness, although what exactly the brand is supposed to be these days remains something of a mystery, even to them. And unfortunately, Bryant being taken for task was really only just getting started.
Next up was Osefo, who had it on good authority that Bryant had been calling her the “S word,” as in scammer. Considering their history, the conversation went surprisingly smoothly, even as Osefo explained the particular weight such an accusation carries for her as a Nigerian woman. Bryant apologized, Osefo accepted, and just like that, they moved on to Bryant’s upcoming congressional testimony about her late father’s experience with a brain tumor.
Osefo, who had already donated to the National Brain Tumor Society in his honor, even offered a little fashion advice, suggesting Bryant wear blue instead of pink because the color conveys trustworthiness. Whether Bryant caught the fashionable shade remains unclear, but she certainly took the advice to heart.
Hilariously enough, Bryant showed up to the next gathering wearing blue, despite the occasion’s black-and-white dress code. These women are so unserious sometimes. Unfortunately, the blue did very little to help her reception.
The occasion was a birthday celebration for newcomer Courtney Ajinça’s husband, Washington Wizards assistant coach Alexis, and the luxury event planner had pulled out all the stops. However, almost immediately after arriving, Bryant approached Glover about telling Osefo she’d been using the “S word,” apparently not expecting Glover to let that prim and proper British politeness slip and give her a taste of some good old-fashioned DMV bluntness.
“I feel that’s very rich coming from you,” Glover snapped.
Glover questioned how Bryant could criticize her for sharing information with Osefo when Bryant had been discussing her marriage publicly without so much as checking in. Making matters worse, Darby had already told Glover about the deleted podcast remark, leaving Bryant to explain why she’d been teasing more revelations about a situation involving Glover’s husband and children.
“As long as you can get a check, anybody’s pain, anybody’s family, that is free game for your success,” Glover told Bryant. “And that kind of friendship, my dear, I don’t want it.” Ouch.
Bryant attempted to defend herself, but when Dixon arrived and confirmed removing the remark, there was little room left for debate. As the women began talking over one another, Huger, who knows a thing or two about finding herself in the hot seat, offered some cheeky advice from the sidelines.
“Just say I don’t remember!”
A classic move from the Grand Dame’s playbook, although Bryant might have needed more than selective amnesia to get herself out of this one.
Eventually, the women made their way to dinner, where the awkwardness continued, this time with the noticeable absence of nearly everyone’s husbands. Huger’s explanation for Ray’s absence was perhaps the most revealing. When asked where he was, she initially suggested he wasn’t available before clarifying, “Well, I didn’t invite him.” Well, alright then.
The guest list also included Monique and “Real Housewives of Atlanta” alum Cynthia Bailey, while a little tension brewed between Courtney and Stacey Rusch. Earlier in the episode, Rusch’s beau, Thiemo, had surprised her with another proposal during a romantic dinner, but when the conversation turned to wedding planning, Rusch revealed she’d already selected a planner despite previously discussing the possibility with Courtney.
The drama continued at the table, although the focus shifted to Darby and Dixon, who got into a heated exchange over who was responsible for stirring up the mess. Darby questioned why Dixon had mentioned the deleted podcast remark, while Dixon pointed out that Darby had been the one to bring Glover’s marital troubles into the conversation publicly.
And round and round they went, with the birthday boy and his fellow coach left sitting there like deer in headlights. Somehow, between the accusations and side-eyes, the ladies eventually managed to raise their glasses to life, health, wealth, and friendship. The irony was delicious. Honestly, this is the stuff fans come for.
The zingers that truly zing, the little digs about “baby breaths” and “balloons,” the one-liners like, “that kind of friendship, my dear, I don’t want it!,” the glam slapped on their faces while it’s all happening, and the fact that “the S word” has somehow become a thing. The way the drama was so carefully set up, beginning with Bryant, Dixon, and Darby, followed by Osefo, only for it all to come crashing down around Bryant at a birthday party where she couldn’t even follow the dress code—there’s society women, and then there’s Real Housewives, and thank God we have both.
