That Grape Juice‘s From The Vault shines the spotlight this week on Brandy’s ‘Afrodisiac,’ a bold pivot in the GRAMMY-winner’s sound and look.
By 2004, the Vocal Bible was ready to experiment, and with Timbaland behind the boards, she delivered one of the most forward-focal tracks of her career.
Directed by Matthew Rolston, its accompanying video matched the sonic edge with moody lighting, choreography, and styling that re-positioned Brandy, an act the masses had known since childhood, as a woman.
Though it only peaked at #42 on the Billboard Hot 100, fans instantly recognized the cut as an offering ahead of its time.
Two decades on (as B-Rocka sets sail on ‘The Boy is Mine Tour‘ with Monica), the visual still feels fresh, streams climbing steadily as new audiences discover its daring artistry.
‘Afrodisiac’ proved Brandy wasn’t content to rest on the laurels of her previous. As with its like-titled parent album, it showcased that she could push R&B into the future, leaving behind a cult gem that continues to influence.
