A former employee of Eminem is facing up to five years behind bars after admitting to illegally copying and selling the rap superstar’s unreleased music.

Joseph Strange pleaded guilty to criminal infringement of copyright for the unauthorised distribution of the Detroit rapper’s recordings.

Strange, who worked at Eminem’s studio between 2007 and 2021, was arrested in March 2025 after authorities accused him of obtaining unreleased tracks and selling them to around 25 buyers. Prosecutors say the recordings were then circulated online, with some making their way onto streaming platforms.

According to the FBI, investigators discovered copies of Eminem’s unreleased material during a search of Strange’s home. One person reportedly paid $50,000 for the recordings, which were estimated to be worth around $750,000.

Assistant Attorney General A. Tysen Duva said:

“Joseph Strange abused a position of trust to unlawfully copy and sell unreleased music belonging to Eminem, profiting from works that were not yet authorized for public distribution, his conduct undermined both legal and artistic rights.”

However, Strange’s attorney, Wade Fink, has pushed back, describing the DoJ’s (Department of Justice) public statements as “hyperbolic.” He maintained that the circumstances were more complicated than the allegations suggested, adding that his client had accepted responsibility.

Strange is scheduled to be sentenced on January 27, 2027, and faces a maximum five-year prison sentence.
