President Donald Trump says he wants the UFC boss to take over the White House briefing room, but it’s unclear whether the unusual offer is serious.
President Donald Trump may be looking to bring some muscle to the White House briefing room.
On Saturday, Nov. 7, Trump announced on Truth Social that he had offered the position of White House press secretary to his longtime friend and UFC CEO Dana White. But whether the president was making a serious job offer or simply having a little fun with his followers remains unclear.
“I am pleased to announce that the Great Dana White, a violent Fighter and Warrior, has been offered the job of Press Secretary of the United States,” Trump wrote.
The president went a step further, suggesting White bring several professional fighters along to serve as assistants, including UFC stars Islam Makhachev, Khabib Nurmagomedov, Justin Gaethje, Daniel Cormier, Amanda Nunes and Kayla Harrison, whose last name Trump misspelled as Harris.
“We need these people to defend us against the Lunatic Left,” Trump wrote, adding, “Dana will be a Press Secretary like none other. Dana, please take the job!”
According to CNBC, the unusual announcement comes as Trump is looking to fill a vacancy in one of the administration’s most visible positions. Former press secretary Karoline Leavitt left the role in August, and her successor, Katie Zacharia, departed after just five days on the job.
White appeared to play along with the announcement, sharing Trump’s post and an image of himself behind the White House briefing room podium on his Instagram stories, accompanied by the caption, “On to the next chapter.”
Neither White nor the White House has confirmed that he intends to take the job, according to the Associated Press.
The UFC executive and Trump have maintained a close friendship for decades. White has publicly supported Trump’s presidential campaigns, including speaking at the 2024 Republican National Convention. Earlier this year, he helped organize a UFC event on the White House South Lawn to celebrate Trump’s 80th birthday.
The announcement also comes just days after Republicans suffered major losses in the midterm elections, surrendering control of both the House and Senate to Democrats. Trump has since announced additional changes to his administration, including replacing White House chief of staff Susie Wiles with longtime adviser Stephen Miller.
For now, it’s unclear whether White is actually considering trading the Octagon for the White House briefing room. But with Democrats preparing to take control of Congress, Trump’s suggestion that he needs a team of fighters to defend his administration has certainly attracted attention.
