As they celebrate 30 years of “The Score,” the musicians are inviting fans around the world to share their stories and messages of hope.
Ms. Lauryn Hill and Wyclef Jean are giving Fugees fans something they’ve been waiting more than two decades to hear: new music.
The musicians have teamed up with international public art platform CIRCA to launch Fugees Hopeline, an interactive phone experience that offers a preview of a forthcoming Fugees medley while inviting fans around the world to share their own messages of hope.
Launched Nov. 5 as part of the 30th-anniversary celebration of the group’s landmark album, “The Score,” the hotline features personal messages from Hill and Jean. Hill’s daughter, Selah Marley, narrates the experience, guiding callers through the options, including listening to the new music and recording their own reflections.
Fans in the United States can participate by calling +1 (424) 7-FUGEES (738-4337), while international listeners can access the hotline through WhatsApp. Voice submissions will be accepted through Dec. 31, after which the line will remain available for listening.
The recordings will become part of a growing international audio archive, with selected contributions featured at Miami Beach’s Faena Forum on Dec. 4 and 5 during Art Basel Miami Beach. Hill is curating the exhibition alongside Saint & Citizen.
Inspired by artist John Giorno’s 1968 “Dial-A-Poem” project, Fugees Hopeline also includes three original collages created by Hill using photography, typography and archival images from the group’s history. Limited-edition prints are available through CIRCA, with larger versions signed by both Hill and Jean.
The collaboration follows the musicians’ surprise reunion performance in the Hamptons in July and an appearance at Hill’s Diaspora Calling Festival in the United Kingdom in August.
Hill and Jean kicked off their U.S. anniversary performances Nov. 4 at Berkeley’s Greek Theatre, with upcoming stops at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles on Nov. 8 and Seattle’s Climate Pledge Arena on Nov. 10.
Three decades after “The Score” helped cement the Fugees’ place in hip-hop history, Hill and Jean are celebrating their legacy by inviting fans to become part of the story.
