HBO has released the trailer for the upcoming documentary ‘Seen & Heard: The History of Black Television’.

Hotly anticipated, the special is set to delve into the history and cultural impact of Black television and Black representation in those shows.

Executive produced by Issa Rae, the doc will show never-before-seen archival behind-the-scenes footage from Black shows such as ‘Moesha’, along with showcasing the evolution of Black television via interviews with some of the industry’s stars and creatives.

Split into two parts, Part One: Seen centers on the decades of Black television, and shows how characters moved into visibility. It will also highlight the rise of Black-led shows and their tackling of social issues helped push the culture forward.

Part Two: Heard follows the ownership of the narrative and spotlights certain creatives and their successes. From Shonda Rhimes‘ casting practices, Oprah Winfrey‘s control of her brand, and Rae’s online to TV success. Additionally, this episode looks to the future with Lena Waithe‘s mentorship programs and pushes for inclusive storytelling across all platforms.

The appearances in the film will include: Tyler Perry, Tracee Ellis Ross, Ava DuVernay, Debbie Allen, Kenya Barris, Mara Brock Akil, Malcolm-Jamal Warner, Norman Lear, Byron Allen, Swizz Beatz, and more.

‘Seen & Heard: The History of Black Television’ will premiere on September 9 and September 10 on HBO and will be available to stream on HBO Max.
