Tina Knowles sat down with Oprah Winfrey on Oprah’s Book Club in a Starbucks Café in Chicago to discuss her new memoir, ‘Matriarch’.

The beloved 71-year-old dished on topics like motherhood, how she shaped Destiny’s Child‘s style, and how she feels in her seventh decade.

Full story below…During their discussion on raising Solange and Beyoncé, Knowles talks about how she wanted them to be seen as equals, and how they both were different growing up. She states:

“One of my girlfriends was very structured, very educated, you know everything had to be a certain way. Her kids made straight A’s…Solange was very attracted to it. She was always telling me I didn’t measure up to Cheryl…Beyoncé loved the freedom of not having a structure…and Bey was very much like me cause I never enjoyed school.  For Bey in her creative space, I think she was very much like me.”

The matriarch also dishes on making Destiny’s Child’s clothes and how she got backlash for it. Labels were claiming she’s making them look like Motown. She says:

“It was a fight for a long time but the people loved the costumes. The fashion magazines didn’t love them, the designers didn’t love them…they made fun of it all the time. Even to the point, I remember Beyoncé went to the Oscars one year, and I did this fabulous gown with origami…it was black and gold and everybody was going crazy on the red carpet. And she said, finally felt comfortable to say my mom did the dress. They said that it look like I got the fabric off the drapes and made it for her. It was so defeating because I was so excited finally they accept it but they made fun of it.”

Additionally, she touched on being in her 70s and being enough. She states in the book:

“I am in my 70s and I just learned that I am enough. I wished I would’ve realized this at 40 or 50…maybe even younger. But that is why I am telling you. I have tried to collect as much wisdom as I can to pass on here. This precious time of gathering memories is closing. It’s not an end I know but my new beginning.”

Tina Knowles ‘Matriarch’ is out now online and in stores.
