Universal Music Group (UMG) is selling half its stake in Spotify in a deal worth about $1.4 billion, but the real headline-worthy news is what comes next.

A clause in Swift’s 2018 UMG contract forces the label to share the proceeds with artists. Even better, said artists get the money on a non-recoupable basis, meaning UMG can’t use the payout to cover any debts artists owe.

According to reps, the label plans to use the sale as part of a wider financial strategy to boost its share buyback program while still paying artists their cut.

Swift pushed for fairer artist pay years ago with a stance on streaming platforms that made headlines and sparked debate across the industry.

Now, that same fight is paying off in a big way.

As many artists still struggle to earn substantial proceeds from streaming, this change – dubbed the “Taylor Swift clause” – could revolutionize that process by putting money directly into performers’ pockets (at least for now).

Once again, the reigning Pop diva proves her business moves carry weight. And this time, other artists get to benefit too.
