Tank Ties Longtime Usher Billboard Record Thanks to Aaliyah-Led #1 R&B Hit ‘Gone’

Proof that Aaliyah fans are more anxious than ever for her long-awaited, first posthumous studio album ‘Unstoppable‘ continues to come courtesy of the Billboard performance of its latest single ‘Gone.’

Though slammed by its guest star Tank as “unapproved,” the song is soaring on R&B radio. So much so, it made history when it was planted in the #1 spot on a Billboard R&B chart recently.

Look inside for details.

Last week – 20 frames after making its debut on Billboard’s Adult R&B Airplay ranking – ‘Gone’ ascended to the #1 spot. The tune remains there this week.

While the feat came as a first on the tally for the late R&B princess, it marked a historic 10th visit to the chart’s summit for Tank.

Among male vocalists, he’s now in a three-way tie with Usher and Charlie Wilson for the most song leaders of the R&B hitlist.

When all acts are considered, however, the three trail Alicia Keys (14), Toni Braxton (11), and Mary J. Blige (10) for most Adult R&B Airplay #1 hits.

Tank’s Adult R&B Airplay #1s

  • “Please Don’t Go”
  • “Next Breath”
  • “When We”
  • “Dirty”
  • “Can’t Let It Show”
  • “I Deserve”
  • “Slow”
  • “See Through Love”
  • “Before We Get Started”
  • “Gone”

And though the continued success of ‘Gone’ could be a signal of R&B lovers’ eagerness to get their hands on a new Aaliyah project, the late singer’s label Blackground Records has not announced its official release date.

Previous reports indicated the LP will be a star-studded affair and feature contributions from Tank as well as Chris Brown, The Weeknd, Drake, Future, Ne-Yo, Timbaland, and more.
