Kelly Clarkson has made it clear: she isn’t running from the AI revolution.
Indeed, while debate continues to rage over artificial intelligence’s growing presence in music, the powerhouse vocalist has boldly declared that she “loves” the technology.
However, when it comes to AI-generated artists battling humans on the same charts? That’s where Clarkson draws the line.
Full story below…
Appearing on Matt Rogers and Bowen Yang’s ‘Las Culturistas’ podcast, Clarkson used the show’s ‘I Don’t Think So, Honey’ segment to unpack her stance.
“It’s controversial, I don’t care. I love AI. There’s very amazing things with AI that I’m obsessed with. I’m very into it artistically, too.”
Still, the ‘I’d Be Lyin’ singer believes a distinction needs to be made once commercial competition enters the picture.
“But when you see AI artists competing on a chart with humans, I have an issue. I think there should be a separate chart.”
Importantly, Clarkson isn’t calling for AI music to be shut out altogether.
She shared:
“I think it’s welcome to the table. I think it’s really cool and creative what we’re going to create musically with AI. I think it’s a fun field to play in, but I don’t think they should be competing with humans. There can be an appetite for both.”
Clarkson’s remarks come at an interesting time; one in which industry folk grapple with the topic.
As reported, AI-powered R&B act Xania Monet became the first known AI artist to earn enough radio airplay to enter a Billboard radio chart. The digital “performer” has since continued releasing music, including the 21-track ‘The Things I Didn’t Say.’
So, while Clarkson’s enthusiasm for AI may raise eyebrows, her call for separate lanes is landing in the middle of a very real industry reckoning.
