‘Playing Games‘ hitmaker Summer Walker is making it clear she’s not playing at all when it comes to the headline-grabbing $50 million drama she’s involved in with her label home Interscope Records.
As has been reported, Walker’s attempt to exit her longtime recording contract has sparked a legal showdown with Interscope that could cost her a staggering $50 million.
The Universal Music Group (UMG) subsidiary is pushing to enforce a contract she signed in 2017 making her responsible for two more albums and an EP before Walker walks away from them, unless she wants to pay a hefty sum for breaching the agreement.
After learning of the lawsuit filing, Summer’s attorney Keith Moten released a statement.
“While we are disappointed that Interscope has chosen to pursue litigation, we are confident in Summer’s legal position and her right to challenge the continued enforceability of her recording contract with Interscope,” he said before relaying, “Summer has made extraordinary contributions to Interscope’s success, and we believe she deserves the opportunity to move forward under terms that fairly recognize her value as an artist. We intend to vigorously defend against Interscope’s claims and pursue appropriate legal relief.”
Moten – while hoping to reach an amicable resolution with the label – has indicated Walker does have plans to countersue if necessary.
“The parties’ discussions have remained professional, and Summer remains open to a constructive resolution. She hopes that the matter can be resolved in a manner that respects the interests of all involved and avoids unnecessary or prolonged litigation. In the meantime, Summer remains focused on her music, her artistry, her children and her fans,” Kevin said.
Despite hinging the legality of her attempt to cut ties with the imprint on California’s seven-year statute (a state law that allows individuals to terminate contracts that run past that amount of time), a 1987 amendment allows labels to sue for damages if an artist chooses to exit a record deal before all their album commitments have been fulfilled – even if it’s after that seven-year period.
To date, Walker has only delivered three studio projects from her contract’s five-album commitment.
