Apple TV is expanding the former limited series with an original chapter focused on Washington’s character and her complicated past.

Fans of “Imperfect Women” won’t have to wonder if Season 1 will be the last of the series. On Monday (Oct. 5), Variety revealed that the Kerry Washington-led drama will indeed be back for a second season, losing the limited series tag it wore when it premiered earlier this year.

While season one was based on the novel from Araminta Hall, the upcoming second season will be centered around Washington’s character Eleanor for a wholly original arc. The series, which debuted in March, also starred Elisabeth Moss and Kate Mara for season 1.

According to a logline for Season 2, the season will feature Washington’s character Eleanor as “she returns to her hometown roots in the affluent black enclave of Martha’s Vineyard, only to find that beneath it’s idyllic surface, lie secrets and scandals that threaten to upend everything she thought she knew about her past.”

“We were thrilled to see how deeply these women and their stories resonated with audiences around the world, and I’m so excited to step back into Eleanor’s shoes,” Washington said in a statement. “She’s intelligent and strong, but she also finds herself navigating complicated and sometimes messy situations. We at Simpson Street along with our incredible partners at Apple and Love & Squalor Pictures can’t wait to explore a fresh chapter for her and share where this story takes us next.”

“After a wildly entertaining first season, driven by the performances of Kerry, Lizzie and Kate, we jumped at the opportunity to expand the world of ‘Imperfect Women’ through Kerry’s fan favorite character of Eleanor,” said Matt Cherniss, Apple TV’s head of programming. “Annie and Justin’s thrilling new story felt like an exciting and natural next chapter. We can’t wait for fans to experience it.”

It’s a season of positivity for the Emmy Award winner as she prepares to star in the upcoming crime thriller “Animals” alongside Ben Affleck, Gillian Anderson, Adriana Paz, Luis Gerardo Méndez, and Steven Yeun. The film centers around Affleck and Washington, and their attempt to get ransom for their son’s kidnappers as Affleck’s character is running for Mayor of Los Angeles. The film hits the popular streamer on Friday, Oct. 9.
