Before Paula Abdul became one of the 80’s top Pop superstars, her claim to fame was serving as choreographer to some of the decade’s most memorable tours and music videos – notoriety fueled in great part by her contributions to Janet Jackson‘s 1986 breakthrough era ‘Control.’
Tapped to helm the moves for Jackson’s now-iconic ‘What Have You Done for Me Lately,’ ‘Control’ (the LP’s title track), ‘When I Think of You,’ and ‘Nasty’ music videos, Paula’s contributions not only helped launch Janet as the premier face of female dance in Pop but also aided the tunes in becoming four of the historic five singles that made the ‘Control’ album the first by a woman to launch five tunes to the Hot 100’s top 5.
In celebration of the project’s impact on Jan’s career and the musical landscape at large, Abdul took to X (formerly known as Twitter) to toast to its 40th anniversary (February 4).
“Giving Janet Jackson her flowers. Celebrating 40 years of ‘Control’ – an era that changed my life forever,” she started the touching message. “Watching Janet fully step into her power and creative voice during this time was such a beautiful experience. So many incredible memories from working together.”
That’s not all she said. Look below for Paula’s full heartwarming statement.
The post came not long after Jan took to social media herself to salute the groundbreaking project. Click here to see what she said.
