Nancy Mace criticizes Smithsonian exhibit featuring RuPaul during congressional hearing

Rep. Nancy Mace drew attention during a congressional hearing after criticizing the Smithsonian for displaying photos of RuPaul at the National Museum of American History. The South Carolina Republican argued the exhibit exposes children to inappropriate content and increases their vulnerability to abuse.

Rep. Nancy Mace sharply criticized the Smithsonian Institution during the congressional hearing examining the Trump administration’s approach to the museum’s U.S. history programs. During her remarks, Mace objected to photos of drag performer and television host RuPaul being displayed at the National Museum of American History. “RuPaul is a man that dresses like a woman, literally,” Mace said.

She questioned why the RuPaul images were included in a museum visited by families and school groups. “Do you know how many kids get raped by adults in this country?” she asked during the hearing. Mace went on to argue that displaying such images to children is harmful. “Putting this kind of crap in front of kids sexualizes them,” she said. “Makes them vulnerable to people who wanna abuse them.”

Video of Mace’s comments on RuPaul was shared by the Instagram account Here’s Why Kevin. The remarks sparked divided reactions online. Supporters praised Mace for raising concerns about what children are exposed to in public institutions. Critics argued there is no evidence that museum displays featuring LGBTQ+ public figures increase the risk of child abuse.

RuPaul is an Emmy Award-winning entertainer and the creator and host of “RuPaul’s Drag Race.” The Smithsonian has previously featured influential entertainers and cultural figures whose work has shaped American history.

The Smithsonian has not publicly responded to Mace’s comments.
