The GRAMMY-winning femcee returned to Norfolk State University for her Battle of the Bands showcase.

Bringing together five bands from prestigious HBCUs including Norfolk State University, Hampton University, North Carolina Central University, and Elizabeth City State University, the event saw each band paid homage to Missy in its own way, celebrating the music and legacy of the Virginia native.

The homecoming celebration was reportedly sold out, with an estimated 15,000 people in attendance for the star-studded band showcase.

Missy shared:

“Virginia will always be home, so bringing something like this back means a lot to me,”

“HBCU bands have always brought so much energy, creativity, and culture to music. I want this to be a celebration of them and something that inspires the next generation to dream even bigger.”

Virginia state leaders and Rolling Stone CEO Julian Holguin also highlighted Missy Elliott’s previous 2025 recognition of ‘Get Ur Freak On’ as the Song of the Century during the celebration.

In 2022, former Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin officially declared October 17 to be “Missy Elliott Day.”

This latest celebration further highlights the ‘Supa Dupa Fly’ femcee’s love for her home state and sets the stage for what is reportedly set to be a major year for her in 2027.
