Michael B. Jordan stars as Ricardo Tubbs alongside Austin Butler as Sonny Crockett in director Joseph Kosinski’s upcoming film, ‘Miami Vice ’85’.

Michael B. Jordan and Austin Butler are bringing two iconic television detectives back to the screen in Miami Vice ’85. The first-look images have been released as production on the reboot gets underway.

Jordan plays Ricardo Tubbs, while Butler takes on the role of Sonny Crockett in the new film inspired by the hit NBC crime series Miami Vice, which ran from 1984 to 1989. The original show starred Philip Michael Thomas as Tubbs and Don Johnson as Crockett, two undercover detectives working in Miami, Florida. According to Variety, the film is scheduled to open in theaters on May 19, 2028.

The reboot features an ensemble cast that includes Alden Ehrenreich, Whitney Peak, Camila Morrone, Danny Ramirez, John Leguizamo, Andrew Schulz, Edi Gathegi, Walton Goggins, André Holland and Michael Irby. Joseph Kosinski, the filmmaker behind “Top Gun: Maverick” and “F1,” is directing the project. Dan Gilroy wrote the screenplay, based on characters created by Anthony Yerkovich for the original television series. Eric Warren Singer wrote an earlier draft, while Kosinski and Dylan Clark are producing.

The filmmakers plan to revisit the style, atmosphere, and crime stories that helped make the original series a cultural touchstone. According to the film’s description, “Miami Vice ’85” will explore “the glamour and corruption of mid-80’s Miami.” The movie draws inspiration from the original series’ pilot episode and first season, which helped establish its distinctive approach to fashion, music, police drama, and visual storytelling.

The project places Jordan in another major film role following his acclaimed performance in Sinners, for which he won the Academy Award for Best Actor in 2026. He is also set to star in The Thomas Crown Affair, which he directs, opposite Adria Arjona. Butler, known for films including Elvis and ‘Dune: Part Two’, is also attached to A24’s upcoming film Enemies, co-starring Jeremy Allen White.
