Mariah Carey‘s not one to bite her tongue on most topics, and her complicated relationship with the GRAMMYs has proven no exception.
Having only won 6 of the music industry’s highest honor from 34 nominations over her 35-year career, Carey’s losses at the award show are nothing short of historic – particularly when her 1995 critically acclaimed ‘Daydream‘ album lost out six times in one night.
Just a month after making headlines for calling the ceremony “overrated,” the diva is back in the news for claiming the GRAMMYs “pushed her out.”
Hot on the promo trail in support of her September 26-released new album ‘Here for It All,’ Mariah dropped by ‘Live with Kelly & Mark‘ on the same day to dish on the project, its singles, and her history-making career-at-large.
When referred to as a “such a GRAMMY winner” by hostess Kelly Ripa, Carey quickly made a correction.
“Eh, not really,” the diva quipped about her snubs over the years. “They pushed me out…I’m not being politically correct about it because I really went through a lot with that.”
After Ripa asked if Carey believes she should have more than 6, the Songbird Supreme didn’t answer directly but instead reflected on that fateful 1996 ceremony where she lost out a whopping 6 times in one night despite opening the show with a rousing performance of her Boyz II Men-assisted smash ‘One Sweet Day.’
Elsewhere in the convo, however, Mariah did express gratitude over her BET Award and recent MTV VMA Vanguard victory and eventually concluded by sarcastically remarking “let’s say ‘yay’ for the GRAMMYs and we love them.”
