Lil Nas X is turning to his late mother’s words as he prepares to release new music. Lil Nas X’s new single, “World’s Greatest,” is set to arrive after the 27-year-old rapper announced his mother’s death in August. In a new video, the Grammy winner shared an old voicemail from his mother encouraging him to keep going.

Lil Nas X, whose real name is Montero Hill, posted the video to Instagram on Sept. 30. In the clip, he sits on his bed listening as his mother tells him to keep his head up, continue walking by faith and never give up.

After the message ends, music begins playing and Hill holds up a notebook revealing the title “World’s Greatest” alongside a crown drawing.

Hill wrote that “Walk by faith, not by sight” was one of his mother’s favorite sayings and that the phrase has continued to resonate with him as he moves through life. He ended the post by dedicating the moment to the “World’s Greatest” and announcing the song for Oct. 1 at noon ET.

His mother died over the summer. Hill announced her death Aug. 29 with a series of family photos and wrote that losing her was going to hurt. A cause of death was not publicly disclosed.

Hill has previously spoken about having a complicated relationship with his mother because of her struggles with addiction. In a 2020 interview, he said efforts to help her had not always worked but emphasized that love remained between them.

The new release follows a difficult period for the artist. Earlier this year, Hill said he had spent several months in rehab and had been diagnosed with bipolar disorder. He also said working with a therapist and psychiatrist had helped him feel more grounded.

The World’s Greatest single is scheduled to arrive Thursday at noon ET. It will be Hill’s first single in about a year and a half.
