Kobe Bryant‘s ascension story is heading to the big screen.

According to the THR, the late legend’s journey to basketball supremacy at the Los Angeles Lakers is set to be told in film form.

Powered by Warner Bros, the movie is christened ‘With the 8th Pick’ and chronicles the high-stakes process that led to Bryant getting drafted into the NBA in 1996.

Having already generated early buzz within the industry from studios and streamers, Warner swooped in and secured the rights for the title. A director has yet to be announced.

The film is told from the view of John Nash, the general manager of the New Jersey Nets, and incoming Nets coach John Calipari, who really wanted Bryant at the time.

The news comes as Bryant’s wife, Vanessa Bryant, paid tribute to her late husband (who tragically died with their daughter Gianna in a 2020 plane crash) on what would have been his 47th birthday.

She wrote:

“We love and miss you and Gigi so much. Sending our love to you. Happy birthday, baby. @kobebryant ”
