Kim Burrell may still be on redemption’s road herself nearly 10 years after her anti-LGBT rhetoric landed her in hot water, but that hasn’t stopped the Gospel diva from advocating for the forgiveness of others who have suffered similarly publicized falls from grace.

During GRAMMY week, Burrell was recently spotted at the red carpet of MusiCares’ Person of the Year event in celebration of Mariah Carey.

While there, the Gospel icon chatted it up with our friends at Baller Alert and took time to share her unique thoughts on forgiveness.

“Hopefully, people will learn how to forgive fast,” she shared with the resident anchor. “In the world of music while they’re being stars, people like Diddy and R. Kelly – they may have their details or whatever the news may reveal – but they’re my brothers before all of that happens. And I don’t know how to detach from my love for them…I don’t wish to see any continuous punishment especially when a person has already dealt with the repercussions thereof.”

At writing, Kelly is serving a 30-year sentence sex trafficking and racketeering while Diddy (born Sean Combs) is serving a four-year sentence for his own set of sex crimes.

Burrell’s statement undoubtedly ignited a firestorm of commentary on social media, with many deeming her words insensitive to Combs and Kelly’s victims and other victims of sexual assault or misconduct.

At the time of this report, however, Kim has not publicly responded to the backlash that ensued from her calls for the forgiveness of the embattled stars.
