After the trailer for ‘Southern Fried Rice’ dropped this week, the freshman series received a lot of backlash for the show’s premise. Now, Keke Palmer, whose network houses the title, decided to respond to the controversial feedback.

In a post on Instagram, Palmer briefly addressed the concerns people had about the show.

During this video, she centers her remarks on the show’s creator, Nakia Stephens, and her dedication as a creative. She also unpacked how KeyTV is investing in her, and the network is focusing on having and supporting Black creatives.

She says:

“Look what you like is subjective, but the support of Black creatives is not. And it’s a task KeyTV takes on with pride because if you want to be a creative, you have to be able to create. And that takes money and it’s KeyTV’s mission to find the funds for you to be in practice. For you to experience trial and error and to take your projects off the page and get more than one chance to do it in action. So, whether you like it all or some or none, I say give these creatives a chance to grow as we continue to grow in supporting them.”

‘Southern Fried Rice’ is a web series that centers on Koko Johnson, a Korean American girl raised by Southern Black parents. She enrolls in Wright University, a prestigious and fictional HBCU in Atlanta, and is instantly immersed in a culture that both embraces and tests her. Koko navigates everything a college kid goes through as far as belonging, love, friendship, and identity. It also explores how she is made to see how others see her, and most importantly, how she sees herself.

The series stars  ‘Love Island’ star Kordell Beckham, Choyce Brown, Ashley India, Jada Lewis, Page Yang, and Shaun Rose.

The criticism and backlash received for this series are due to their belief that this show is tone deaf and not uplifting Black culture.
