‘It’s sisterhood’: Spinderella explains where her relationship with Salt-N-Pepa stands ahead of upcoming reunion tour

The legendary DJ was fired from the group in 2019, but after a lawsuit and reconciliation, the trio is set to hit the road for the ‘It’s Iconic’ tour featuring TLC and En Vogue.

The women of Salt-N-Pepa are preparing to hit the road again for a reunion tour. According to Deidra “DJ Spinderella” Roper, the trio is in a “good space.”

Speaking to PEOPLE ahead of the “Iconic Tour” alongside girl groups TLC and En Vogue, Roper made it clear that despite seven years of prior fighting, lawsuits and public spats, the healing process between her and her Salt-N-Pepa sisters has been promising.

“We’re in a good space today. I said today. We’re in a good space today,” Roper said. “It’s a sisterhood, and sometimes it’s good, and sometimes it’s not so good.”

She added, “This is the first time we’ll be on stage on a tour in years for me. They’ve been doing shows. I’ve been doing my own thing, but us coming together, this is a really big moment,” Roper adds. “So we’re doing okay. We’re doing good.”

Years ago, things weren’t exactly “good” between the group and Spinderella.

In 2019, Roper says Cheryl “Salt” James to Sandra “Pepa” Denton not only dismissed her from the group, but fired her via e-mail, ending a 32-year relationship that began with the group’s debut album, “Hot, Cool, & Vicious” and their breakthrough single “Push It.” Roper sued Denton and James, alleging fraud, unpaid royalties, multiple breaches of contract and intentional misrepresentation. The suit was eventually settled in July 2019, though terms were not disclosed.

Two years later, when a Lifetime biopic about the group was set to air, Roper stated Denton and James “wrongfully excluded” her from it. Denton and James countered, saying they reached out to Roper, but nothing was resolved, prompting Roper to tell Billboard that her relationship with her Salt-N-Pepa groupmates was “over.”

“When you have a legacy, you want to make sure it would outweigh this stuff,” she said in 2021. “I’m not closed off to [a reunion], but I will be respected. I will be treated fairly. … I will never be in a group that does not want to be with me.”

Spinderella said she’d only be open to a reunion if there was an apology. With the trio coming together for the NAACP Image Award Hall of Fame induction and the upcoming tour, things appear healed behind the scenes for one of hip-hop’s legendary trios.

“Anything negative in my space won’t help me get through this tour,” she adds. “So I’m doing everything in a positive nature and it’s working. I think I’m in a happy state going into it.”

The “It’s Iconic” Tour kicks off Saturday, August 15 in Franklin, Tennessee and wraps October 11 in Concord, California.
