Woman allegedly struck by Sky Whatley at Georgia concert is pursuing legal action

Shamika Boyd says the alleged incident left her with two black eyes and that she has filed a police report as her attorney prepares to pursue the case.

A Georgia woman who says she was struck by Southern soul singer Sky Whatley during a concert is pursuing legal action after the alleged incident left her with two black eyes.

Shamika Boyd told 11Alive that she was attending the Sept. 6 Legendary Awards Show & Concert at the Londzell Performing Arts Theatre in Tucker, Georgia, to support her daughter, DJ Jada Boyd.

Video aired by 11Alive appears to show Whatley reaching down from the stage toward Boyd before striking her. The footage does not establish everything that happened immediately before the contact, but Boyd says she was not threatening the performer.

“When he hit me, I was devastated because I’m thinking, ‘Why? Why did he hit me?’” Boyd told the station. “He had no reason to hit me.”

Boyd said she initially believed Whatley was reaching toward her to interact with her before she was struck. She also alleges that the singer subsequently made an obscene gesture and directed profanity toward her.

According to EURweb, Boyd says she suffered two black eyes following the alleged incident. She has filed a police report, and attorney Shannin Render says the legal team intends to pursue the matter in civil court.

Render told 11Alive that the case could seek compensation for expenses related to the incident, including medical treatment, transportation and income Boyd may lose while recovering.

Boyd’s daughter also spoke with 11Alive, saying she did not realize her mother had been struck until after the incident. She said she wants her mother to receive justice.

The incident has drawn renewed attention after video of the encounter circulated online nearly two weeks after it occurred.

Whatley has not publicly responded to the allegations. 11Alive reported that it attempted to reach him through social media and an email address associated with his Linktree but had not received a response at the time of publication. No arrest or criminal charge against Whatley had been confirmed in the reports reviewed.

Boyd and her attorney now say they intend to pursue the matter through the legal system.
