#EmmysSoWhite returns as Black actors face another night of few televised acting wins

 Five years after the hashtag first went viral, viewers are asking the same question again: Are these awards worth Black stars’ time?

As the Primetime Emmys aired last night, social media users couldn’t help but notice an all-too-familiar pattern among the winners: Black actors were largely shut out of the acting categories presented during the telecast. By the end of the night, the hashtag #EmmysSoWhite was trending once again.

The hashtag first gained traction in 2021, a nod to 2015’s #OscarsSoWhite, after the Emmys handed every major acting award to white performers despite a notably diverse slate of nominees. Five years later, viewers are exhausted by having the same conversation. So much so that many are questioning why Black stars continue to show up for these award shows when they have a pattern of overlooking Black talent, while others question if the lack of diversity in this year’s acting Emmy awards will be mirrored in future projects.

Part of the problem may come down to who’s voting. The Television Academy says it is “dedicated to honoring excellence in television while promoting creativity and diversity,” but its own membership tells a different story. According to the Academy’s 2026 transparency report, 67% of its members identify as white, while just 9.2% identify as Black and 7% as biracial or multiracial. And as the current administration continues its attacks on DEI efforts, the fight for representation in Hollywood and beyond is far from over.

Still, while the debate continues over whether Black talent should keep investing time and energy in historically white institutions like the Emmys, Black talent managed to shine throughout the evening.

 For instance, Cynthia Adarkwa a writer and producer on “The Pitt” won her second Emmy in the Outstanding Drama Series category. Similarly, Octavia Spencer, Ernest Harden Jr. and 50 Cent took home their first Emmy awards during this year’s Creative Arts Emmys ceremony last week And while these stars may not have walked away with trophies last night, they received applause from viewers across social media.
