A Texas couple has been charged in the freeway shooting death of 17-year-old Alyssa Wilson, who was driving to the St. Louis Zoo.
Alyssa Wilson was on her way to see Halloween lights at the zoo. She never got there.
NBC News reported that the St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office has charged Willie Herndon, 42, with first-degree murder and armed criminal action in the Oct. 14 shooting that killed the 17-year-old. His wife, Taiya Herndon, faces a hindering prosecution charge, accused of driving him to an Illinois hotel roughly 12 miles from St. Louis. Both are from Arlington, Texas.
Investigators say neither had any connection to Alyssa.
The shooting happened around 7 p.m. as she drove south on Interstate 170 in Overland, heading to Boo at the Zoo. Jack Abell, chief deputy commander of the regional Major Case Squad, described what security footage captured: Alyssa passed a white Buick Enclave stopped on the shoulder, someone stepped out of that vehicle, stood briefly, fired a single round, returned to the car, switched off the hazards, and drove on.
The bullet entered the rear of her red Buick Encore. She was taken to Barnes-Jewish Hospital and pronounced dead.
Her father, Robert Hickman, spoke at Monday’s news conference. “Alyssa was 17, excited about her life, excited about her future,” he said, growing emotional.
She was 60 days from turning 18, and the family had been planning their first vacation together, a Disney trip so she could meet Princess Tiana. “Unfortunately, she’s not going to get to do that anymore,” he said. “This was a senseless act.”
Investigators combined the security video with automated license plate readers to trace the out-of-state vehicle, then surveilled a hotel in Caseyville for hours before arresting the couple Friday. A court-approved search produced a firearm and additional evidence, with a shell casing recovered from the roadside under analysis.
Abell said Willie Herndon discussed his involvement during an interview and provided information relevant to investigations elsewhere, which remain active. He declined to address motive for that reason.
Bail was set at $1 million for Willie Herndon and $500,000 for his wife, with both held pending extradition.
The FBI’s Dave Herr credited a coordinated effort for solving the case within 36 hours.
