Students carried “Justice for Nolan Wells” signs and called for renewed scrutiny of the 18-year-old’s death.

Hundreds of Detroit students took to the streets to demand answers in the death of Nolan Wells, an 18-year-old college football player whose body was recovered from the water near Mississippi’s Horn Island in July.

The student-led demonstration, reported by Metro Detroit News on October 26, brought together students from Cass Technical High School and the Detroit School of Arts. Carrying signs reading “Justice for Nolan Wells” and chanting “No justice, no peace,” the Detroit students called on officials to reopen the case and provide greater transparency to Wells’ family.

Organizers said the Detroit students march was intended to support the family and press authorities for accountability amid continuing questions about the circumstances surrounding his death. Wells disappeared during a Fourth of July boating outing with friends traveling to Horn Island, off the Mississippi Gulf Coast. His companions returned without him, and his body was discovered in the water on July 6, two days after he went missing.

The circumstances surrounding his disappearance and death have drawn scrutiny from his family. Notably, medical examinations have not established a definitive cause or manner of death. Both the state and an independent autopsy reportedly classified the cause and manner of death as undetermined. The state autopsy documented two bruises beneath the scalp at the back of Wells’ head but found no skull fractures. Those findings have contributed to the family’s continued calls for answers. However, the reported injuries alone do not establish how Wells died or prove that a crime occurred.

The Detroit students who organized the march are joining the call for greater scrutiny. Their demands center on reopening the case, increasing transparency and ensuring that the family receives answers about what happened during the July outing.
