Asked whether she now felt differently about clearing the sample, Lauper told The Guardian:
“No. First of all, I don’t believe in cancellation.”
The singer explained that her signature hit has always represented women’s right to freedom and joy. Minaj’s present-day political alignment does not alter that message for her.
“I still don’t think you cancel people, because otherwise there’s no room for discussion.”
She added: “If you want people to listen to you, you need to listen to people.”
Minaj sampled Lauper’s 1983 classic on the ‘Pink Friday 2’ fan favorite. The pair later performed the track together during the rapper’s record-setting world tour.
The comments arrive after Trump called Minaj his “favorite” during an Oval Office scene shown on ‘Million Dollar Pitch.’
