‘Clayface’ Scores $43 Million Global Debut on $44 Million Budget

‘Clayface’ has sunk its teeth into the box office, delivering a much-needed victory for DC Studios.

Starring Tom Rhys Harries and Naomi Ackie, the R-rated horror thriller has stormed to the top of the North American box office, while making a sizeable splash internationally.

And with strong audience reception already bolstering its prospects, the film’s opening numbers suggest DC’s daring gamble may be paying off.

Full story below…

Directed by James Watkins, ‘Clayface’ has opened to an estimated $43 million worldwide, comprising $24 million domestically and another $19 million from international markets.

The result sees the gruesome comic book adaptation debut at #1 in North America, beating stiff competition from  ‘You Can See Everything,’ which earned $19.5 million in its second weekend.

What makes the performance particularly noteworthy is its comparatively modest production budget of approximately $40-44 million.

While the global opening doesn’t translate into immediate profitability, given additional marketing and distribution costs, the figures offer an encouraging start for a studio.

Adding to the positive outlook, moviegoers awarded the blockbuster an impressive A- CinemaScore.

The film follows aspiring actor Matt Hagen (Harries), whose desperate attempts to repair his disfigured face take a terrifying turn.

Indeed, ahead of its release, That Grape Juice caught up exclusively with Harries, Ackie, and the film’s cast and director at its European premiere in London, where they opened up about the dark and decidedly different DC offering.

What’s more, with Halloween arriving next weekend, ‘Clayface’ could benefit from the seasonal appetite for scares and strong word of mouth.

Suffice it to say, the flick is off to a barnstorming start!
