The world of politics is reacting to the shocking home killing of Hollywood director and producer Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele, on Sunday.
Reiner was an Emmy Award-winning filmmaker with credits including the Morgan Freeman-fronted “The Magic of Belle Isle” and political projects such as “God & Country,” which explored the rise of Christian nationalism and its connection to far-right politics. Reiner was also a liberal activist who donated millions to and campaigned for several Democratic politicians.
Most notably, he co-founded the American Foundation for Equal Rights, which initiated the court challenge against California Proposition 8, a measure that banned same-sex marriage in the state.
“Michelle and I are heartbroken by the tragic passing of Rob Reiner and his beloved wife, Michele. Rob’s achievements in film and television gave us some of our most cherished stories on screen,” said former President Barack Obama. “But beneath all of the stories he produced was a deep belief in the goodness of people—and a lifelong commitment to putting that belief into action.”
Obama added, “Together, he and his wife lived lives defined by purpose. They will be remembered for the values they championed and the countless people they inspired. We send our deepest condolences to all who loved them.”
Fellow California resident and former vice president, Kamala Harris, also reacted to the news of the death of Reiner and his wife.
“Rob Reiner’s work has impacted generations of Americans. The characters, dialogue, and visuals he brought to life in film and television are woven throughout our culture. Rob loved our country, cared deeply about the future of our nation, and fought for America’s democracy,” said Harris.
“Rob and his wife Michele loved each other very much. They were dear friends, and Doug and I are devastated to learn of their passing. Our thoughts are with their loved ones during this tragic time.”
Rob Reiner, 78, and Michele Singer Reiner, 68, were found dead in their Los Angeles home on Sunday evening. According to reports, the couple, who had been married for 36 years, had lacerations on their bodies consistent with a stabbing.
According to TMZ, the Reiners’ 32-year-old son, Nick Reiner, is in custody in connection with the shocking murders.
Reiner was an outspoken critic of President Donald Trump, most recently condemning his administration’s role in temporarily pulling late-night TV host Jimmy Kimmel off the airwaves. The longtime filmmaker worried that Trump’s FCC would soon come for him next.
“This may be the last time you ever see me,” he told CNN.
