From basking to backlash, Chris Brown barely had time to soak in the magnitude of a recent honor presented by U.S. Rep. Jasmine Crockett before they were both inundated with criticism for the historic moment.

During the Arlington, Texas, stop of the ‘R&B Tour‘ with Usher on Saturday (September 12), Chris walked out to accept a plaque indicating the R&B heartthrobs had been recognized in the Congressional Record for their contributions to the arts.

The honor was presented by Crockett and Texas state Rep. Venton Jones (who bestowed Brown a separate legislative recognition), with the former framing the moment as a celebration of Black music and culture for the singers’ enduring influence in the entertainment genre.

And while attendees cheered on as Brown accepted the ceremonial award, commenters online weren’t exactly joining the chorus of acclaim given the singer’s history with domestic violence, assault, alleged drug use, and other legal woes.

In fact, the criticism had swelled so much over the weekend the ‘Run It’ singer ran to Instagram Stories on Monday (September 14) to address it head-on.

“Thank you so much,” Brown wrote before sharing, “I apologize for any backlash you have to deal with for awarding for me. I’m not political but I move off of frequency and energy and I’m so grateful. ONCE AGAIN, THANK YOU.”

He wasn’t the only one addressing the blowback.

Texas state Rep. Venton Jones took to ‘The Don Lemon Show’ to offer an apology to Black women and domestic violence survivors for the brief ceremony, citing the belief the recognition may have caused them additional trauma.
