American Airlines passenger duct-taped after allegedly calling Black flight attendant the N-word

Flight 618 from Dallas-Fort Worth to Newark was diverted to Baltimore after the passenger allegedly became violent.

An American Airlines passenger was duct-taped to his seat after allegedly directing a racial slur at a Black flight attendant and becoming violent during a flight from Dallas-Fort Worth to Newark. The passenger was restrained Thursday night as the incident added to past racial incidents on flights and renewed attention on Black passengers who sued the airline over discrimination.

TMZ reported that the disturbance began when the man, who eyewitnesses said appeared intoxicated, started yelling at another male passenger and shouting about Jesus and going to hell. A Black flight attendant approached in an attempt to calm him down.

Witnesses told the outlet the passenger then called the flight attendant the N-word and made anti-gay remarks. The situation allegedly escalated when he hit the passenger seated next to him and struck the man’s computer.

A female passenger reportedly stepped in to help but was pushed by the disruptive traveler. Three male passengers then came to her aid, and flight attendants provided them with duct tape and zip ties to restrain the man.

Video obtained by TMZ shows crew members and passengers holding him in his seat as he appears to resist. Photos show duct tape wrapped around his body, hands and head.

American Airlines confirmed that Flight 618, traveling from Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport to Newark Liberty International Airport, diverted to Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport because of a disruptive customer. The airline said law enforcement met the aircraft and helped remove the passenger before the flight continued to Newark.

The Federal Aviation Administration separately confirmed that Flight 618 landed safely in Baltimore around 10:15 p.m. on Sept. 3 after the crew reported a passenger disturbance.

TMZ reported that Maryland Transportation Authority Police arrested the man and booked him on state charges. The FBI said it was gathering information and consulting with the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Maryland to determine whether federal charges could also be filed.

American Airlines said it does not tolerate violence and thanked its employees for their professionalism during the incident.
