Nevada has entered a new political chapter after Democratic Attorney General Aaron Ford defeated Republican incumbent Joe Lombardo in the 2026 gubernatorial election, becoming the first Black person elected governor of the state.
The victory returns the governor’s office to Democratic hands after Lombardo’s Republican win in 2022, giving Democrats an important breakthrough in a state that has remained politically competitive in recent election cycles.
POLITICO reported Ford’s victory, highlighting the significance of his election and the growing number of Black candidates securing gubernatorial victories across the country. His win also adds to a broader moment in American politics, with Democrats Keisha Lance Bottoms and Republican Byron Donalds also emerging victorious in their respective gubernatorial contests, according to the report.
Ford’s path to the governor’s office reflects a political career shaped by his personal background and experience in public service. Raised in a working-class family, he has spoken about the economic difficulties he experienced growing up, including periods when his family struggled to afford basic necessities.
Before entering statewide politics, Ford worked as a mathematics teacher and later pursued a legal career. He became Nevada’s attorney general in 2019, building a public profile through his work as the state’s top law enforcement official.
During his campaign, Ford placed considerable attention on economic concerns affecting Nevada residents. Affordable housing, the cost of living and opportunities for working families featured prominently in his message. He also sought to position himself as a candidate focused on expanding economic opportunity and making the state more accessible to residents facing financial pressure.
His victory-night remarks reflected the themes that defined his campaign. Addressing supporters, Ford said, “This campaign didn’t happen by accident. It happened because of faith, because of family, because of hard work, and because the people of Nevada decided that our best days are still ahead of us.”
The result is particularly significant given Nevada’s political makeup. The state has a diverse electorate, with Democratic support concentrated in urban areas such as Las Vegas, while Republicans maintain considerable strength in rural communities. Winning statewide therefore requires candidates to build support across different regions and voter groups.
Ford’s election also carries symbolic importance beyond Nevada. His achievement adds another Black governor to the nation’s political landscape at a time when representation in state executive offices remains a significant part of the wider conversation about political inclusion.
Nevada Democrats reclaiming the governor’s office is an opportunity to reshape the state’s political direction after four years under Republican leadership.
